  • October 22, 2006 (London, Ontario, the "Forest City"): Before an attentive audience of 375 Canadian-Arcadians, including a large delegation from Toronto, Dr. Nicholas D. Kokonis gave an inspiring lecture on "Arcadian Ideal vs. Immigration Marvel" and presented his novel ARCADIA, MY ARCADIA. He was an invited guest of the Arcadian Society of London, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary since its founding.

Suggesting that we pay less attention to myths and legends, which do not always tell the whole truth, Kokonis attempted to undo the "Arcadian myth," according to which Arcadia was a sylvan paradise. "Arcadia was never an earthly paradise," he said. "If it was, were we all immigrants like a fool Adam to leave it behind? Even in ancient times, Arcadia was a poor country and its people, in their search for a better life, sailed to distant lands, including Sicily, Byzantium, Crete, Cyprus and Egypt. They succeeded because they exhibited remarkable traits: Love for work, entrepreneurial spirit, industriousness and courage."

"This tradition continues to our day," Kokonis said, "with contemporary Arcadians distinguishing themselves as exemplars of the Immigration Marvel."

The event, under the able leadership of Helen Verveniotis, President of the Arcadian Society of London, and her dedicated team, including Mary Singeris and John Liabotis, took place in the spacious Cultural Centre of the magnificent, newly erected Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The Hellenic Folklore Ensemble of London performed dances from the Arcadian region of Greece.
